Conditions We Treat

Pressures on the NHS throughout the UK have been widely publicised lately, as it becomes increasingly difficult to access health services, with excessive waiting times.

Many patients are waiting several months to discuss their symptoms of chest pain, palpitations, breathlessness, etc with a Cardiologist. Or even if they have, there is now a significant wait to have the appropriate tests to investigate things further.

This page is designed as an educational resource to give patients some helpful information about some cardiac conditions and will be updated every few weeks.

Mitral Regurgitation

Mitral regurgitation is a condition that comes up regularly in everyday cardiology. People often want to understand what causes it, how quickly it progresses, what symptoms to look out for, and when to consider treatment.

Hypertension – what you need to know.

Hypertension means high blood pressure (BP). The normal blood pressure is around 120/80mmHg. The first number represents the pressure generated by the heart as it pumps. The second number represents the pressure remaining in the arteries when the heart relaxes. Hypertension generally refers to systolic hypertension i.e. the first number is high, usually above 140mmHg. There is most commonly no underlying cause for this in 80-90% of cases and it is known as Essential Hypertension.

Heart Failure

Heart failure can be broadly divided into 2 types. HFrEF is the commonest form of heart failure resulting from muscle damage to the main pumping chamber in the heart (the left ventricle) after a heart attack, or the strain of heart valve problems or other structural heart defects.

Angina

Angina is chest pain brought on typically by exertion or physical activity which is relieved with rest. It is caused by cholesterol build up in the heart (coronary) arteries which in turn limits the flow of blood through the artery to part of the heart muscle

Supraventricular Tachycardia

The normal organised heart rhythm is replaced by a chaotic, irregular and often rapid heart rhythm.
